SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Nov. 22 (PIA) - "We aim for a zero incidence as we host the surfing competition here in the province."

This was shared by Police Lt. Col. Silverio Ordinado Jr., chief of the Police Community Affairs and Development Branch of the La Union Police Provincial Police (LUPPO), during the monthly Civil Defense DRRM (Disaster Risk Reduction and Management) radio program of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the Philippine Information Agency in the Ilocos.

A total of 1,360 personnel from the Police Regional Office 1, the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard and other uniformed and non-uniformed personnel will augment the LUPPO to ensure the safety and security during the conduct of the surfing competition in San Juan town.

Said competition is the lone event that will happen in the province as part of the 30th Southeast Asian Games hosted by the country.

"But we will also need the cooperation of the community folks and force multipliers on ground to ensure the safety and security of all the athletes, coaching staff, organizers, guests, and media personalities during the event proper," Ordinado added.

More than 40-60 athletes from six competing countries along with their coaches will actively participate in the surfing contest which will run from December 2-8, 2019.

LUPPO reminds the public to avoid drinking and lighting bonfires along the seashore area, bringing of any pointed or deadly equipment, and swimming or any beach activity after 6:00 in the evening.

Ordinado likewise reminded both guests and locals to maintain cleanliness and avoid dumping their trashes anywhere.

The LUPPO is primarily tasked to ensure the safety and security for the event and in a strong partnership with the provincial government, through its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), for the emergency preparedness response.

The OCD and the PDRRMO will conduct an earthquake and tsunami drill on November 22 as part of the emergency and response preparedness plan. (JCR/AMB/JDS/PIA La Union)
